20. Mar 21 [11:00 hrs] Final Exam grades and Course Grades are
available on the quiz grades page, and Final Exam solutions are available
on the quiz solutions page. Have a great spring break!
19. Mar 16 [15:30 hrs] Final Exam is on Thursday March 18th at 11:30pm in WLH2005. Revised "Finals equation sheets" with more formulae and typoes corrected is here.
18. Mar 15 [16:45 hrs] Five pages of equations and constants that will be given to you on Finals are here for you to get familiar with. Send e-mail if you spot any mistakes or typoes. As in the quizzes, You MAY NOT bring a cheatsheet of your own.
Pl. note that Chapters 6 & 8 are not going to be on the final exam.
There will be eight problems on the final. There will definitely be problems from early chapters on topics such as Relativity, Photoelectric effect, Compton Scattering etc.
Pl. remember to bring PhotoID, Blue books, calculator and a clear
mind! Allnighters are not a good idea for this course. Good Luck !
17. Mar 10 [14:00 hrs] At the course review session this Sunday, we'll go over the Winter 2003 2D Final Exam, as well as old quizzes from both this quarter and last quarter. The Winter 2003 stuff can be found here.
16. Feb 26 [11:15 hrs] Quiz 7 will be on Ch 5.1-5.5.
15. Feb 19 [11:30 hrs]: There
was an error on the original Quiz 5 solutions, which resulted in some people
getting points off for correct answers. On problem 1a, if you used Delta x
= 2 m, you should have gotten 0.02 m/s, and if you
used Delta x = 4 m, you should have
gotten 0.01 m/s. If you got points taken off for this, please submit your
quiz for a regrade by next Friday, Feb 27. The usual regrade rules apply
-- you should write a note explaining why you want a regrade, only quizzes
written in pen will be considered, etc. Also, the two students who reported
the error (you know who you are) get double the points back!
14. Feb 18 [23:55 hrs] Quiz 6 will emphasize Ch.4 particularly the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Pl. review also HW problems from last week.
Extra! Extra ! Picture taken by the Chandra Observatory recently of a Black hole devouring a star are here. Using Quantum mechanics, we will learn what it takes to blow up a black hole next week!
13. Feb 18 [17:00 hrs]: All quiz grades, including regrades, can now be found on the "Quiz Grades" page under Quiz 5 scores. Or, you can just click here.
12. Feb 4, 2004 [17:00 hrs]: Quiz 4 will be on Chapter 3.
11. Jan 29, 2004 [20:00 hrs] : Quiz 3 will definitely have a problem on Compton Scattering. Based on my interaction with some of you during yesterday's discussion and today's HW session, I have the following advice for you if you wish to crack quiz 3:
Make sure you understand & can completely derive the Compton effect formula (equation 2.28). Start by carefully analyzing Fig 2.25 and then, using the three conservation law equations, derive for yourself each of the steps (equation 2.29 thru 2.35) leading up to the form of equation 2.28.
I have done more steps of the derivation (see problem 32 in book) than the book in my slides of Jan 28.
Understand how to derive but dont memorize!
10. Jan 28, 2004 [12:00 hrs]: Quiz 3 will cover Ch.2, sections 2.1-2.5. It will emphasize the Photoelectric and Compton Effects.
9. Jan 22, 2004 [20:00 hrs] : Quiz 2 will be on Chapter 1 (Relativity). It will emphasize concepts from sections 1.7 - 1.10. Bring Blue Book, remember your code number (or atleast write your full name clearly on the Blue book) & Good Luck !
8. Jan 16, 2004 [23:05 hrs] Week 3 & 4 class schedules and week 3 lecture slides are posted at the usual locations.
7. Jan 13, 2004 [23:00 hrs] Quiz 1 will cover material in sections 1.1 thru 1.6. Rest of the lecture material covered this week will be covered in Quiz 2.
6. Jan 8, 2004 [19:00 hrs] correction !: Final exam is scheduled for 18th March NOT 15th March. Time and location TBA. Pl. make this change in your calender and handout immediately !
5. Jan 7, 2004 [10:45 hrs] Old quizzes from Fall and Winter 2003 have been posted for your studying pleasure. They can be found here.
4. Jan 7, 2004 [10:00 hrs] Due to a scheduling conflict, for THIS WEEK ONLY, the Thursday night problem session will be in WLH 2001. Starting next week, the problem session will move to its usual room in Peterson 108.
